Hello and welcome once again to my blog. Today I have another exciting topic to share with you. In my last article, I shared a post asking if you do believe in healthy eating, see link here. Also, check out this post on eating habits to help you live longer. I do believe in healthy eating and today I am sharing with you the importance of eating varieties of fruits and vegetables;
- Eating fruits and vegetables on a daily basis as part of a healthy diet may help you reduce your risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and many forms of cancer.
- The fiber in some fruits and vegetables may help to lower blood cholesterol levels and maintain your heart health. It also helps to aid proper digestion thereby causing a healthy bowel movement. Usually, you should have a bowel movement after every meal.
- Eating more fruits and vegetables may help reduce your chance of Type 2 diabetes and other ailments.
- Generally, fruits and vegetables are lower in calories than other foods, so eating more fruits and vegetables can help to lower your overall calorie intake.
- Fruits that are rich in potassium like oranges and bananas may help you maintain healthy blood pressure.
- Almost all fruits and many vegetables are low in fat and sodium. Fruits and vegetables are also naturally cholesterol-free. So, consuming them would automatically reduce your cholesterol level.
- Eating whole fruits and vegetables adds fiber to your diet. Fiber fills you up and this feeling of fullness may help you maintain your weight or even help you lose weight.
- The fiber contained in many fruits and vegetables also acts as sponges to our stomachs. In a layman language really, I would ask the question “Is it possible for you to wash your toilet or gutter properly without using a sponge? The answer I believe is a big NO, that is the same way your stomach and colon cannot be made clean if you do not consume enough fiber in your meals and of course by consuming lots and lots of fruits and vegetables.
- If you are a woman of childbearing age or in your first trimester of pregnancy, you need folate (folic acid), a nutrient that is found in fruits and vegetables. Folate reduces the risk of birth defects during your baby’s development so you end up having a gorgeous looking baby or babies!.
- Fruits and vegetables contain phytochemicals (plant compounds) that may help prevent or delay disease and help you maintain good health.

- Fruits and vegetables contain a lot of water which helps to keep your body hydrated. Remember your body is made up of about 70% water.
- Fruits and vegetables contain a lot of oxygen which if consumed regularly eventually helps oxygenate your blood, thereby providing your organs with more oxygen to enable them to perform optimally.
- Fruits and vegetables help to cleanse your body, by this I mean they aid in detoxification which simply means the process of helping your body get rid of toxins that are either acquired from the toxic or processed foods you eat, your environment, your bad habits and even from some drugs you use.
- By helping your body in the detoxification process, fruits and vegetables eventually help in boosting your immune system (Your body’s natural soldiers). Thereby fortifying them to be strong enough to help your body ward off diseases.
- Fruits and vegetables contain loads and loads of vitamins and minerals that are needed for your body to perform well on a daily basis. It is also advisable to consume them fresh rather than in the form of pills. Supplements should be taken as an alternative source for your daily required nutrients.
- Another great reason to eat more fruits and vegetables is the variety of colors, flavors, and textures that fruits and vegetables bring to your meals and snacks.
Overall, health is wealth and I am sure you do not want to be on your sickbed before you realize how important consuming fruits and vegetables are.
